Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat Major, D. 960

Brief AI Commentary

Schubert’s final piano sonata unfolds on an unusually spacious scale. Its serenity is repeatedly disturbed by a low trill and by remote harmonic turns, as though tranquility and unease were sharing the same landscape.

Brendel respects the work’s breadth without allowing it to lose direction. The slow movement’s solitude, the scherzo’s delicate lift, and the finale’s restrained energy together form a farewell that remains lucid rather than sentimental.
