Finlandia, Op. 26

Brief AI Commentary

Finlandia begins under the weight of dark brass and grows through struggle toward a broad hymn-like melody. Written during Russian pressure on Finland, the tone poem became inseparable from Finnish national feeling even though its argument is entirely orchestral.

The Proms setting gives the final pages public scale and collective force. Sibelius achieves affirmation without erasing the severity from which the music began.
