The overture gathers melodies from Die Fledermaus into a miniature drama of suspense, elegance, and celebration. Its famous waltz theme repeatedly restores buoyancy after quick changes of mood.
Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic treat rhythmic lift as a form of speech. Tiny delays and accents give the music wit without disturbing its effortless flow.
